On 19 February 2019, in Lisbon, representatives of the organizing committee of the World Forum of the Best Teachers met with Mr. Miguel Barros, President of the Portuguese Association of History Teachers (Associacao de Professores de Historia). Also present was a representative of the University of Porto, who traveled specifically to attend the meeting with the Forum's organizing team due to the committee's very tight schedule.
The discussion focused on current challenges in teaching history in schools — including state influence over textbook content, interpretation of historical events, and the urgent need to cultivate critical thinking skills in students. Mr. Barros emphasized that reduced classroom hours and increased administrative burden demand a fundamental reassessment of teaching methods.
The Association, in cooperation with the University of Porto, intends to provide the Forum’s organizing team with a list of Portugal’s top history teachers and support their participation. Their contribution will include a presentation on how history teaching practices in Portugal are being adapted to respond to institutional constraints and curriculum pressures.
