Albanian Coalition for Education Voices Support for the Global Forum

On 7 February 2019, representatives of the Organising Committee of the World Forum of the Best Teachers held an online meeting with Ms. Linda Pino, National Coordinator of the Albanian Coalition for Education — one of the country’s leading civil society organisations advocating for educational reform and accountability in Albania.

The discussion addressed a number of pressing challenges facing the Albanian education system, including:

  • a low level of teacher professionalism, exacerbated by limited public funding (only 2% of GDP, with 80% going toward salaries),

  • outdated educational standards and a low threshold for university admissions,

  • the requirement for families to pay for textbooks,

  • a high prevalence of bullying, both physical and psychological, particularly affecting children with special educational needs,

  • and a high dropout rate, with up to 46% of vulnerable students leaving school prematurely.

Following this open and constructive exchange, Ms. Pino expressed strong support for the mission of the Global Forum, whose goals include bridging educational inequalities, expanding access to quality education for all, and eliminating illiteracy.

The Albanian Coalition for Education pledged to assist the Organising Committee in identifying the country’s most outstanding teachers, who will be invited to participate in the Global Forum free of charge, representing Albania in the international dialogue on the future of education.
